The President General of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Akeem Ambali Olatunji, has commended the Katsina State Government for its strides in improving the welfare of workers. Speaking at the 9th State Delegates Conference in Katsina, Comrade Olatunji applauded the government for approving the payment of gratuities for retirees up to December 31, 2024, describing it as a significant milestone.
“Our counterparts in other states can see that Katsina State is setting the standard. The leadership here has shown commitment to the welfare of workers,” he said.
Comrade Olatunji also highlighted the establishment of monitoring and evaluation committees across local governments. These committees, led by members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), will oversee the implementation of initiatives to address workers' concerns, including access to healthcare facilities.
“In the past month, over ₦190 million was allocated to health facilities in the state as part of workers' contributions. This initiative ensures that no health facility will lack resources,” he noted, adding that sensitization programs for committee members will commence in two weeks.
He urged the NLC to remain vigilant in ensuring that workers benefit fully from the initiatives, including the Patient Divine Pension Scheme. The scheme aims to provide gratuities to workers upon retirement, offering financial stability during their post-service years.
Meanwhile, Muntari Ruma, the Katsina State Chairman of the TUC, praised the collaborative efforts of labor unions and the government in addressing workers' challenges. He called for sustained commitment to policies that enhance workers' welfare and ensure transparency in the implementation of programs.
The conference concluded with a renewed commitment from stakeholders to prioritize the welfare and rights of workers in Katsina State.
